The "Ten-Percent Brain Myth" guided with the Fundamentals of Jaina's Theory of Knowledge

Great religions to pragmatic capacities sporadically abound in the stories of supernatural phenomena which subsumes telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition. However, unfortunately treated as the topics of spiritualism, witchcraft and edification, not the materials of Scientific Enquiry. Whatsoever, have been deciphered about these queer speculations, the most prevalent sole concept is : namely, that there can be senseexperiences from the realm which is not accessible to human brain and sense organs. Possessor of these senses which are not currently accessible to average humans can be a omniscient being tapping to his full potential. Presently, we have no language or any communication system to describe them intelligibly. When inquiring about these affairs we cannot avoid absurdity as presently we lack any linguistic convention on it. Our linguistic convention is derived from the physical world in which the supernatural is not considered as "Normal". It is considerably strained with "Abnormality" in the first place. My aim in this paper is to reconcile this Orthodox Psychology with Science and Philosophy which certainly appears conflicting. This inquiry leads me to enable the 10 percent brain myth

Emotions, Demographics and Sociability in Twitter Interactions

The social connections people form online affect the quality of information they receive and their online experience. Although a host of socioeconomic and cognitive factors were implicated in the formation of offline social ties, few of them have been empirically validated, particularly in an online setting. In this study, we analyze a large corpus of geo-referenced messages, or tweets, posted by social media users from a major US metropolitan area. We linked these tweets to US Census data through their locations. This allowed us to measure emotions expressed in the tweets posted from an area, the structure of social connections, and also use that area's socioeconomic characteristics in analysis. %We extracted the structure of online social interactions from the people mentioned in tweets from that area. We find that at an aggregate level, places where social media users engage more deeply with less diverse social contacts are those where they express more negative emotions, like sadness and anger. Demographics also has an impact: these places have residents with lower household income and education levels. Conversely, places where people engage less frequently but with diverse contacts have happier, more positive messages posted from them and also have better educated, younger, more affluent residents. Results suggest that cognitive factors and offline characteristics affect the quality of online interactions. Our work highlights the value of linking social media data to traditional data sources, such as US Census, to drive novel analysis of online behavior.Comment: International Conference on the Web and Social Media (ICWSM2016

Introduction of case-based learning to teach Pharmacology to second year MBBS students

    Get PDF
Background: Our medical education system has various limitations. In the initial few years of medical education, the focus is more on teaching the theoretical aspect of various subjects and not to apply the knowledge gained to practice. It is important to stimulate a student’s analytic thinking and provide them with an opportunity to see theory in practice. In case-based learning (CBL) a case acts as a stimulant of learning. The aim of the study was to introduce CBL in Pharmacology to teach second year MBBS students and see its effect on their performance. The study also aimed to get student and faculty (Department of Pharmacology) feedback on this teaching model. Methods: A total 180 students of second prof. MBBS and faculty of Department of Pharmacology were included in the study. A total of two topics were taken for CBL sessions. The theory lecture of the first topic was conducted. The students were divided into smaller groups of 15 each and a pretest was taken. This was followed by CBL session and after that post-test was administered. The second topic was covered on similar format. At the end of the two sessions the student and faculty feedback were taken on a five-point Likert scale. Results: A total 127 students participated in the study. 90% of the students agreed or strongly agreed that CBL had been useful in understanding the topics and it will be useful for foundation of their clinical years. All faculty members agreed that CBL does improve student teacher interaction but they found CBL to be time consuming. Conclusions: CBL was well accepted by the students and they want that other topics should be taken up by this method. The faculty also believes that it is worth giving a try but at the same time CBL is time consuming and it may be possible to conduct it for only a few topics in a session

Influence of thyroid hormones on biochemical parameters of liver function: a case-control study in North Indian population

    Get PDF
Normal level of thyroid hormones is important for normal hepatic function and thyroid dysfunction may modulate metabolic function of liver. The purpose of this study is to determine whether liver function is associated with subclinical and overt hypothyroidism. Thyroid and liver function tests were evaluated in 47 patients with overt (TSH ≥10.0 mIU/L) and 77 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (TSH 6.0-9.9mIU/L) and compared with 120 age-matched euthyroid controls. Subjects with overt hypothyroidism had significantly raised serum ALT, AST, ALP and total protein levels as compared to controls whereas subclinical hypothyroid patients had significantly increased levels of serum ALT, ALP and total protein. Further, TSH showed significant positive correlation with AST and ALP values whereas fT3 and fT4 had a negative correlation with AST in overt hypothyroidism. Thus, overt hypothyroid state is associated with significant derangement in biochemical parameters of liver function. Hence, liver function should be regularly monitored in hypothyroid patients

A Configuration Management and Monitoring Toolkit for EOS and Kinetic Drive Cluster

Seagate kinetic drives have been interfaced with the CERN EOS disk storage system abstracting multiple drives as a cluster. Drive cluster are managed by EOS like a single storage mount point. Each drive cluster, access keys and the cluster layout is described in a JSON file. Monitoring EOS and managing configuration files for thousands of disks was inefficient. This project aimed at the development of a web toolkit for configuration management and monitoring of thousands of kinetic drives and EOS via a simple web interface. The proposed application allows to define, modify and publish kinetic drive cluster configurations and to monitor key statistics and individual drive parameters on demand. In this report, I cover how I went about building this toolkit. Sigmoid volvulus complicating pregnancy: a case report

    Get PDF
Sigmoid volvulus in pregnancy is a rare, but devastating pathology owing to its adverse effects on the mother as well as the foetus. It can lead to maternal mortality in 5-50% cases and foetal mortality in up to 30% cases. A high index of suspicion is necessary and timely surgical intervention is the key to improving feto-maternal outcomes. We present a case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman who presented with sigmoid volvulus at 28 weeks of gestation. The patient was taken up for an emergency laparotomy, where the sigmoid colon was found to be extremely dilated and twisted. Bowel resection and primary anastomosis was done. An anastamotic leak occurred postoperatively, due to which re-exploration and colostomy was done. The patient had a spontaneous abortion after the surgery. She was discharged after five days with a functional stoma and elective colostomy closure was done after six weeks

Role of endogenous hormones in premenopausal females with breast carcinoma - a pilot study in north Indian population

The objective of this study is to evaluate hormone levels in premenopausal females with breast cancer at the time of diagnosis and to predict their role as a risk factor of breast cancer in females. Circulating hormone levels were measured in 345 previously untreated premenopausal breast cancer patients during luteal phase (19th-21st day). Their results were compared with a group of 345 age-matched healthy controls. Serum prolactin, testosterone, estrogen and progesterone levels were higher in patients as compared to controls. Regression analysis showed that changes in hormone levels have significant impact on breast cancer. Female patients with breast cancer have abnormalities in hormone levels. These abnormalities may be considered in the pathogenesis of the disease and should be taken into account for the treatment of patients of breast cancer. Reduction of hormone levels might prove to be helpful in preventing breast cancer but further studies are required to prove the benefit of analyzing hormone levels at an early stage. Keywords: Breast cancer; Prolactin; Testosterone; Estrogen; ProgesteroneInternet Journal of Medical Update 2012 July;7(2):25-3
